Eagle Tavern. Lithograph by George Catlin. Albany: Rawdon, Clark & Co., 1825.

The Eagle Tavern was built in 1816 by Gaius Kibbie on the west side of Main Street, just south of Court. Benjamin Rathbun bought the hotel in 1822, and made it Western New York's premier hostelry and the center of Buffalo's social life. Many prominent men stayed there, including General Lafayette, President Van Buren, Daniel Webster, and Henry Clay.
