Please join us for a meeting of local historical organizations, community groups and municipal historians to discuss the upcoming Erie County Bicentennial in 2021. While that may seem a long way off, we have already had preliminary discussions with the County Executive and his staff to begin planning. Much as we did with the War of 1812 Bicentennial, many of the initiatives will be driven by local groups and stakeholders. The meeting will take place in The Buffalo History Museum’s auditorium.

While the main focus of the meeting will be about 2021, we also would like to begin conversations about the upcoming 200th Anniversary of the Erie Canal. Last August, Doug attended a state-wide meeting of county historians, and the Erie Canal Bicentennial came up. Again, as with 1812, New York will not be forming a state commission to coordinate events. Instead, it will be up to local groups to organize events that are meaningful to their particular region. However, unlike 1812, we have the development at Canalside, and we hope that they will be a partner with us as we draw closer to 2025.
