The year 1825, was a great year for Buffalo. The Erie Canal had just opened, and the Revolutionary War hero, Marquis de Lafayette had just visited our fair city. With a population of approximately 2500 people, Buffalo was just beginning to grow. Some great things were on the horizon in Buffalo. But the biggest thing to happen in 1825, was the hanging of the three Thayer Brothers, in Niagara Square, for the murder of John Love. It was the last and only public execution done in New York State. People came from all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Canada to see the hanging. Crowd estimates for attendance at that time were between, 20,000-25,000 people.
