The Erie Canal marked its bicentennial last year, and in keeping with that theme author, lighthouse keeper and historian Mike Vogel discusses the nation-building canal and the canal terminus that also spawned a waterfront so wicked it was termed “the very nostrils of hell,” was regarded as one of the roughest waterfronts in the world– and is now the site of a heritage-themed family entertainment district.
