Ely S. Parker: From Exclusion to Admission

11/13/2025 @ 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

A PANEL DISCUSSION
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 13, 2025 | 6-8 PM
THE BUFFALO HISTORY MUSEUM

Join us for a special conversation honoring the life and legacy of Ely S. Parker (1828-1895), a Tonawanda Seneca leader, engineer, and Civil War officer who was denied admission to the New York State bar in the 1840s because Native Americans were not recognized as citizens. On November 14, 2025, the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Department, will posthumously admit Parker to the Bar, correcting this historical injustice and recognizing his enduring contributions to law and Indigenous representation. This evening’s discussion will explore the significance of this moment and the broader importance of equity and inclusion in the legal profession and historical narrative.

HON. MARK A. MONTOUR, Associate Justice, Appellate Division, Fourth Department, Mohawk
HON. JOHN G. BROWNING (Ret.), Former Justice, Texas Fifth Court of Appeals
LEE M. REDEYE, ESQ., Seneca Nation, Beaver Clan
MELISSA PARKER LEONARD, Descendant of Ely S. Parker

MODERATOR

MELISSA N. BROWN, Executive Director, The Buffalo History Museum
