Thomas J. Geelan’s Infection and Perdition is available at Canalside and the Buffalo History Museum.
About the book: In the mid-1800s, Buffalo’s Erie Canal District was among the world’s most dangerous places. Ciaran McGarry, an Irish orphan and canal hoggee, survives as a pickpocket and black-market hustler before rising to power as a businessman and politician—while secretly living as a sadistic, schizophrenic killer. Through his fractured life, the book explores survival, corruption, moral decay, and discrimination, set against the gritty, historically accurate backdrop of Buffalo’s transformation into a major industrial center.
About the Author: Thomas J. Geelan, a lifelong Niagara Frontier resident and former science educator, drew on his background as a research scientist and a decade of historical study to write this book on Buffalo’s Erie Canal heritage.
