The Buffalo History Museum offers a variety of paid and unpaid academic internships for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates (within two years). Internships are department-specific and designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience while supporting the Museum’s mission to safeguard, remember, discover, and share the stories of Western New York.

Many internships fulfill academic credit or program requirements and include a formal application and interview process.

The Collections internship offers hands-on experience in object handling, cataloging, digitization, and archival research. Interns work at the Museum’s Resource Center (offsite storage facility) and gain direct experience with professional collections management practices.

Education interns assist with school programs, public tours, curriculum development, youth initiatives, and community-centered learning experiences. This internship is ideal for students studying education, museum studies, history, or related fields.
Interns gain experience in lesson planning, facilitation, and working with diverse audiences in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

The Advancement Department strengthens the Museum’s sustainability and community impact by building meaningful relationships and expanding engagement. This department supports communications, marketing, membership, fundraising, volunteer coordination, and audience development initiatives.

Advancement interns contribute to projects that help grow the Museum’s reach and deepen community connection. Recent internship experiences have included social media content creation, digital storytelling, volunteer engagement initiatives, and inclusion-focused projects such as our Volunteer Inclusivity Internship.

Internships in Advancement provide hands-on experience in nonprofit strategy, audience growth, public engagement, and mission-driven communications.
